Reasons why Technology is Needed for Students in the Classroom

Technology is everywhere--entwined in almost every part of our culture. It affects how we live, work, play, and most importantly learn. With mobile and other wireless devices like the IoT becoming an increasing requirement across every industry today, it only makes sense that our schools are also effectively deploying mobile technology in the classroom. However, for many schools, implementing the latest technology is a difficult strategy to navigate.

As teachers, it makes sense to invest our professional development time to become Ed-tech savvy so that we can reach our students effectively. As an added bonus: classroom technology keeps becoming simpler to use and more intuitive, so learning how to use educational technology will save your time.

These are exciting times for education. Innovative classroom technologies are creating possibilities that were unimaginable only a few years ago. We can predict that over the next decade emerging technologies that are now at the cutting edge will become commonplace, and new technological tools will be introduced that does not yet even exist.  We have arrived at a place where we can say with confidence that every the student stands to benefit from the use of technology in the classroom.
Here are our favorite ways that students and teachers are using technology to bring their learning to life.

1. Helps to connect and make students participate
Online polling and other digital tools help to engage all students, including shy students who wouldn’t normally raise their hand in class. Online engagement systems allow you to regularly check in with students for feedback on course materials and assignments; data analytics could be used to help spot areas where students might be struggling, so you can adjust the coursework accordingly.
Student response systems help students measure their understanding of a topic while professors can see what areas they need to review.

2. Prepares students for the workforce
To thrive in the 21st-century workplace, students need to have more than a working knowledge of certain technological tools (electronic calendars, web pages, teleconferencing, electronic whiteboards, etc.). By integrating these technologies into the regular curriculum, institutions are ensuring that their students are prepared for the modern office.

3. Encourages collaboration
Many educational tools offer a variety of functionalities that promote collaboration. For example, Skype provides a way for students to hold virtual meetings with classmates from anywhere in the world. With Google Drive, students can easily share and edit projects with each other.

4. Supports different types of learners
No two students learn the same way, but with technology educators can address diversity in learning styles. A few social feedback tools help the instructors to discover which teaching styles work best by identifying student needs based on real-time feedback.

5. Access information more easily
Technology makes it easier for students to find information quickly and accurately. Search engines and e-books are replacing traditional textbooks. Instead of personal tutors, students can get one-on-one help through educational videos – anytime and anywhere.

In the end, technology in education can open doors to new experiences, new discoveries, and new ways of learning and collaborating.

Reasons why Libraries are more important in the Schools

The development of technology and the internet has made school work easier for a lot of students. For this reason, many students feel no need to regularly visit their school library. Therefore, parents and educators need to raise awareness about the reasons why students should go to the library.

The fact is, however, that libraries are important now more than ever, and here are four reasons why.

1. Libraries Offer More Than the Internet Can
Perhaps you’re wondering why students would need a librarian or access to a digital library when they could just as easily Google a research topic and find everything they need. The collections in an online library are vastly different from the material found on the Internet because of the publishing the process involves rigorous editorial checks and quantitative analysis.

In a limited-access database associated with a library, users can find books, newspapers, journals, magazines, and more. While students may find these databases through search engines, accessing them requires registration. At that point, students are no longer just on the Internet; they are in a library.

2. Libraries Help Raise Reading Scores
In a world obsessed with test scores as the lone metric of teacher and student success, libraries have consistently demonstrated the ability to raise reading scores on standardized tests. One study based on National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) data examined the effects of widespread librarian and media specialist layoffs on student reading test scores from 2004 to 2009. In most districts, fewer librarians meant lower test scores or scores that did not rise as quickly.

On the other hand, 19 of the 26 states that added librarians saw an average rise of 2.2 percent in reading scores, with the study controlling for the addition of other educational staff.

3. Interactions with Libraries Boost Literacy Development
Research consistently demonstrates that libraries are indispensable because of their role in fostering the country’s literacy. One study by the Pennsylvania Library Association suggests that kids who participate in library preschool programs demonstrate more pre-reading skills and emergent literacy behaviors than their peers.

Likewise, library reading programs in the summer — a time when students’ skills typically decline — successfully encourage children to spend more time with books, thereby facilitating reading achievement.

4. Librarians Collaborate with Teachers to Enhance Curriculum
School librarians and teachers make a formidable instructional team, joining their pedagogical and technological expertise to meet student needs. When teachers collaborate with librarians, they are three times as likely to rate their literacy teaching as excellent. Similarly, the more time librarians spend cooperating with classroom teachers, the more they promote information literacy independently, and the more in-service they provide teachers, the higher student test scores rise.

No matter what digital champions may say about libraries, they are not now, nor will they ever be, relics. The presence of libraries and librarians has an undeniably positive effect on literacy and reading test scores. Librarians can work with teachers to enrich curriculum with computers, books, online resources, and more. Libraries are here to stay, simply because society can’t afford to lose them.

Tips on how to Recruit Good Teachers for Schools

Here are simple tips on how to recruit good teachers for schools -

1. Ask Questions by putting them into different situations and observe their actions in the form of answers

Situational questions give the teacher a scenario and have them talk about how they would react to the given information. This is important to do because it shows a pattern of thinking, instead of just a factual response. It is important to see how teachers think, and especially how they make decisions. These types of questions are a little harder to “score” as there aren't right or wrong answers for them.

2. Observe and understand a candidate's passion
It’s always fun to see a person get excited about something they are talking about. It can be found in the words but is most apparent in the body language of the person. Take notice of what the person is most excited about in the interview. Was it a topic about curriculum? Working with a student? Having a success? This can give a good insight into the core values a person has.

3. Partner with local colleges or universities to hire recent graduates
Most colleges have a career center that is always looking for open positions to post and networking opportunities to offer their students. Many of these career centers also host career fairs you can attend to connect in person with new graduates who may be a fit for your organization. This is a great way to connect further with your community, tap into local talent, and build your reputation with college students, recent graduates, and the post-secondary institution itself.

4.  Ask different questions in each interview
Some of these are very standard teacher interview questions, such as “Who is the most important person in the classroom?” If they don’t say the student, stop the interview right there. Everyone gives the same answer, which means that there is no distinction between the candidates. The whole point of the interview is to see who would be the best fit—if all of the answers are the same, then there is no way to differentiate between the responses.

5. Look beyond the classroom
You should definitely look at the big picture when hiring a new teacher, particularly at what candidates can do at the school level. Can they run a club, serve as an adviser or coach a sport?

A highly motivated and energetic teacher, full of good cheer and caring, can be an incredible asset to a community. Also pay attention to how they will interact with parents. They need to win the confidence and trust of the parent community.

An effective recruitment strategy with an excellent recruitment partner will be essential for schools to succeed. Following these steps will make all the difference in winning the war for top talent in the upcoming years.

Common Attributes of Successful Schools

Research showed that although schools may offer a different curriculum and different approaches to teaching and learning there remains common characteristics among schools that nurture student achievement and personal development.

When technology changes, it impacts the kinds of things we want and need. Updates to technology change what we desire; as we desire new things, technology changes to seek to provide them. The same goes for–or should go for–education. To educate today’s students, schools have to adapt to this and provide a modern education, that is infused with technology. To be successful, schools need to change how they do business, and their teachers have to add new skill sets to their repertoire. In this article, we will discuss the attributes of successful schools in the digital world.

1. Leadership
The first attribute is quality leadership. Students perform better when the principal and school board members provide strong leadership. Effective leaders are visible, can successfully convey the school's goals and visions, collaborate with teachers to enhance their skills, and are involved in the discovery of and solutions to problems.

2. High Expectations
The second attribute is having high expectations of students as well as teachers. High expectations of students have repeatedly been shown to have a positive impact on student performance. Students are somewhat dependent on the expectations placed on them during this period of their lives, as they are still shaping their personal sense of ability and esteem. Teachers who are expected to teach at high levels of effectiveness can reach the level of expectations, particularly when teacher evaluations and professional development are geared toward improving instructional quality.

3. Ongoing Evaluation
The third attribute of a successful school is the ongoing screening of student performance and development. Schools should use assessment data to compare their students with others from across the country. Effective use of assessment data allows schools to identify problematic areas of learning at the classroom and school levels, so that teachers can generate solutions to address the problems.

4. Goals and Direction
The fourth attribute of a successful school is the existence of goals and direction, according to research, the successful school principal actively constructs goals and then effectively communicates them to appropriate individuals (e.g., students, teachers, and the community at large). School principals must also be open and willing to incorporate innovation into goals for school processes and practices. So it's important to invite input from all stakeholders in the process of developing school goals. Student performance has been shown to improve in schools where the entire school community works toward goals that are communicated and shared among all in the learning environment.

5. Secure and Organized
The fifth and final attribute of a successful school is the extent to which the school is secure and organized. For maximum learning to occur, students need to feel secure. Respect is a quality that is promoted and is a fundamental aspect of an effective and safe school. Successful schools also have a number of trained staff and programs, such as social workers, who work with difficult or troubled students before situations get out of hand.

How to Choose a Right School for Your Children

It is that time of the year when parents are busy picking the school, they would like to have their child admitted. The next academic year is still 6-7 months away, but schools start the admission process - not just for the first standard but also for nursery and playgroups - in November.
The fact is parents want their kids to get the best education possible. Unfortunately, in their eagerness to provide the best education often they consider only the affordability factor before deciding on the school or curriculum.

  1.Pay attention to Infrastructure
Spacious and renovated buildings do create an impact in the lives of school children. Well-equipped labs help them to perform lab activities in an effective way. Library halls, games equipment, large playgrounds give an extra boost to students for making the most out from such facilities. Assembly area and proper sanitation facilities are other infrastructural elements that speak volumes about the overall level of infrastructure in schools.

Though, there is no denial to the fact that focused students tend to perform brilliantly in all plots but even the experts suggest that such facilities provide an extra edge to the potential students. Thus, the infrastructure of schools should be properly planned so that it assures convenient teaching and learning.
  2. What are the Values and Ethos of a School?
Should a school impart religious values? This is a choice for individual parents to make, ideally in consultation with their child. In the majority of cases, there’s at least some religious control on the board of management, even if a school may initially appear to be secular. It’s generally a little easier to opt young people out of religious instruction at second-level.

  3. What kind of environment does it provide?
The environment with sincere and disciplined students encourages various other children to follow the same disciplined pattern. The external conditions play an influential role in fostering child's overall development. If the environmental features are appropriate, the students will face the positive impact else, the scenario can be the other way round.

The parents should make sure that they look up to a school that follows precise regulations while taking in students as it's yet another factor that tends to make an environment that can be fruitful for their child.

  4. Existence of Extra Curricular Activities
Most of the researchers and educationalists have time and again accepted the role and contribution of extracurricular in the development of children and the fact that they develop the leadership and social skills.

Involvement in creative activities can give an extra edge to a student as it fosters the intuitive and intellectual skills. The creative art, music, dance or sports sessions give students a break from the long tiring classes.

Parents need to realize that these activities have emerged as the most productive way to utilise the time that students get after their theoretical studies. Also, the students from schools that conduct workshops and classes based on sports and creative activities are more capable of acquiring new skills. So, while choosing the right school, the parents should make sure that the school is not just bound to the academics but also lays importance towards the extracurricular wing.

  5 . Access to Modernity
As students from higher classes look up to the e-books for competitive exams and academic preparations, there are schools that keep their websites updated with such digitized study materials and give parents the option to track the overall performance of their child through the website.

The digital classrooms and smart classes are yet another trend that has made the classroom sessions interesting and interactive for the students. So the next time you judge a school's proficiency, do keep its digital existence and modernity in mind.
Remember, while school is a big part of our lives, it's not all of it. Our time as a family before school, in the evenings and during the weekends and holidays is what really shapes our children. School is an essential part but it amplifies what you have already begun to develop in your child. You were and will continue to be, your child's first teacher.

How to recruit the best teachers?

Somewhere in the past the glory that was attached to teaching was lost. With the society giving more value to material wealth, students shifted away from school teaching as a profession. In these circumstances finding meritorious teachers, talented and knowledgeable in their field, is a challenge. The few points given below will be useful while recruiting teachers for a new school.

      1.  Incentives attract talented teachers:
If your school has just come into being and you are looking for teachers, you will have a lot of problems finding good and experienced teachers to accept your offer. Teachers do not accept jobs in areas that are not fully developed and at schools that do not come with a brand. Since the school is new you may offer low salaries. Only financial incentives will be of help. If the pay you offer is not significantly higher than what other schools are offering you may consider to include the performance bonus in package or to offer a one-time signing bonus.

      2.  Implementing peer mentoring among teachers:
New are unable to perform well in a struggling school. To directly address these concerns you may implement strong mentoring groups by pairing new teachers with seasoned teachers who can provide guidance and support.

      3. Pick candidates who are motivated and self-driven:
Some teachers want to face the challenges of working at a struggling or a new school. They consider that this will test their capabilities as leaders and managers. In such a school the teacher feels truly needed. Admitting that your school is need of hard working, committed and dedicated teachers may just turn the tables in your favor.

      4.  Best teachers may be living in your neighborhood:
Teachers, usually, do not want to leave their own cities and neighborhoods. The students and the parents know them and their worth as teachers. So, one of the best teachers of your school may be in your locality. So, advertising for teachers in your neighborhood may be fruitful.

      5. Infuse positivity in your school:
Monetary incentives may attract teachers but they may work for long if the schools are dysfunctional. Schools must organize workshops and training's to encourage teacher creativity and build a positive, collaborative work environment. Take steps to make your school attractive to potential employees.

     6. Do keep your current employees happy:
This is important as the present employees talk about the school work atmosphere outside the school. Their positive review will attract other teachers to your school. In this way, teacher attrition rate will be low, which will give a strong foundation to the school.

Though the above points may prove as a candle to dispel the darkness the process of hiring teachers and retaining them is a challenge. Therefore, to resolve hiring issues and make an effective selection, Educare India team makes the best efforts that the right person for the right place is selected.

Good Handwriting-a boon!

We have often heard parents and teachers drilling into us the benefits of neat and well-formed writing. In the technological world that we live in most of our adult life is completely taken over by the keyboard and it does not matter whether we have a good cursive writing or not. Notwithstanding that, our school life still has to use for handwriting skills.

At the pre-primary stage, it helps if a child is:
a. taught to hold the pencil right,
b. sits in a comfortable chair of the correct height so that he/she can bend at the correct angle,
c. which, in turn, will ensure that the correct amount of pressure is exerted.

Once this is sorted out, the child can begin with practicing simple lines or curves before moving on to letters. Not all children write at the same pace or with the same accuracy. So it is necessary to practice constantly. The type of pencil used also makes a lot of difference in the handwriting. In the 70s and 80s, when pencils were made of wood and were heavy, the handwriting was allegedly better. With lighter plastic pencils, the grip suffered along with the handwriting. The downside of the wooden pencils was that some children found it heavy for prolonged use. The same principle applies for writing with a pen. A good quality pen along with the correct grip and pressure will help write beautifully.

Handwriting reveals a lot about a person's personality. Today, graphologists can analyze our handwriting and say whether we are strong-willed, impatient, lying or contented!! This must be reason enough for every person to try to write beautifully!

The bottom line is that neat handwriting always brings a smile on the face of the reader.

What are the ways of Teaching?

Modern versus the Traditional way of Teaching

·          A mix of modern, traditional and all the other methods of teaching can be used by teachers in every classroom. All it requires is for a teacher to be well planned with the curriculum and the learning objectives. A well-trained teacher technically sounds with command over the teaching language can incorporate different methods to make learning an enriching experience.

·          Many teachers have a general awareness that the Internet offers a rich source of potential learning resources. Even an Internet-resistant "traditional" teacher cannot deny that the World Wide web houses endless and ever-current information on all facets of topics. Yet the Internet is often used as an "add-on" in the classrooms or demonstrations of cutting-edge programs and possibilities which often intimidate rather than encourage educators. An activity that is done for enjoyment without thinking about the end result could be called the play.

·        For generations, there has been the current of thought that while play is fun, it is also a waste of time that could be spent more productively doing something useful, or gainful, for that matter. Childhood is the time when kids have countless opportunities for play. A child is happiest when he is engrossed in the play of different forms. Children can improve their motor skills, enhance their power of imagination and creativity by indulging in play. The play-way method should be a flexible one based on a child’s interest and aptitude. It is unplanned and thus encourages complete freedom of expression. This method rules out grading or marking kids based on parameters, say, for example, home assignments. Instead, the teachers assess the skills and aptitude of the child and communicate their assessments to the parents from time to time.

Adopting various methods of teaching can be the best option for a teacher to groom the students and clarify their concepts. Technology can bring visual understanding and Traditional inputs can bring practical understanding which will result in the success and build a strong foundation.

Mental Well Being among Students

Food, Health, and Education are the responsibilities of any progressive society. Organizing or proving the first two are easier than Education. Institutions are set up to provide education and along with academics they also provide for the physical health and prepare the students to face future challenges in life. Not only students face the pressure and stress but the teachers face them too. And to control the issue, Teacher’s Training Programs should be conducted at regular intervals of time. Neither curriculum nor the schools consider that more than physical health the mental well being of the students is of prime importance. Behavioral issues and rising number of suicides among school going children is alarming! Least realizing that over-ambitiousness of parents put a lot of pressure on the child. Pressure from peers or from school too can affect the child emotionally. Being bullied by other kids can act as a trigger for the student taking the ultimate step.

Attention deficiency usually causes a student to seek for appreciation or even affection from others. This may lead them astray and the end result may be unexpected. Poor mental health may manifest as poor performance in school, lack of self-confidence, lack of motivation, and even poor social interaction. Instead of being concerned and caring towards such a child, the parents are worried about the stigma attached to mental ill health. Some parents refuse to believe that their child may have some problems which would require the services of a counselor.

If the society wants its future to be in safe hands of the youth, who are emotional, sentimentally, intellectually and physically strong, then the role of teachers must include that of a counselor too. School Consultants in India bridges the gap in the curriculum which, today, has given no place for the holistic growth of a student, is apparently the only solution to the problem.

Advantages of School Uniforms in India

Over the past decade, the school uniform has become an increasingly common policy in many communities worldwide. As opposed to the requirements of students to wear specific clothing in the form of uniforms, dress codes provide guidelines through which students are allowed to wear any clothing that meets the school's requirements, whether they pertain to the color, style or cut of the clothing. Consequently, school dress codes are designed to create a certain atmosphere in a school while providing students with a bit of freedom of expression through their wardrobe.

On the other hand, many parents have conveyed worries about the costs involved in buying the necessary uniforms and accessories. However, there are several sure benefits to having school uniforms. Consider the following:

Advantages of School Uniforms:
I. Peer pressure regarding clothing is not there:
If there is uniform, everyone has to wear the same cloth. When every student is wearing the same standardized material, there is no peer pressure and judgment due to costumes. Your friends don’t tease you for not wearing clothes of a particular brand or any fashion styles. This helps in building a better relationship with the students.
II. There is uniformity in studying:
When all students wear the same uniform, the socioeconomic distinction made between them is less. Although higher levels may afford better brands, the overall look is almost the same. This helps in framing the mindset of the students where they don’t see poor and wealthy people differently.
III. A discipline-maintained environment:
Maintaining control and dignity in school is essential. The character, mentality of the child, is formed during this period which makes it extremely important to keep them under the eye. Children in uniform get a feeling of being under a strict provision which makes them pay attention in studies, do their homework regularly and build better friendships.
IV. These are less costly:
It should be ensured that everyone can afford to uniforms and there is not a lot of money spends on clothing. Getting branded jeans or dresses can be costly. You can provide two school dresses in that money.
V. It doesn’t take much time to get ready:
When there is a specific uniform, students don’t waste time in the morning standing in front of the closet deciding which outfit to wear. Students in school tend to spend a lot of time just in determining which cloth to wear so that they look nice. This shouldn’t be the mentality. A school child should consider the school where the primary focus will be education.
